Origins of the Salvation Army
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Tennessee Pr (January, 1995)
Average review score:

Even-handed, gentle tempered critiqueThe Salvation Army in the United States has galvanized into an incredibly successful fund-raising and social work organization. Murdoch's work explores the historic origins of its social justice mission. His portrayal of the Booths, the husband and wife team who founded the Army, is largely sympathetic if sometimes critical. His thesis throughout this book, convincingly demonstrated, is that the Salvation Army's social work among the urban poor was not an outgrowth of successful evangelical work among these folks, but instead a substitute in light of a ministry that consistently succeeded among suburban English Methodists rather than those in the most impoverished parts of London. Murdoch creditably seeks to distance himself from the Salvation Army apologist biographers, yet a few of his own images--Ms. Booth preaching in the West End while Mr. Booth toils in the East End, seem a bit too literary (albeit sometimes the literary is also the true). Murdoch's treatment of the autocratic, nepotic nature of the early Salvation Army is not heavy-handed, and his appreciation of the Booths' desire to make a difference rather than merely form a denomination is well-portrayed. Throughout this work, the Salvation Army seems an interesting experiment in pure Wesleyanism, leading to unpredicted failures and unlooked for success. This book is a consistently interesting read about a people from a time which, though relatively recent, seems remote now.

Orthopedics Speller
Published in Paperback by W B Saunders (15 January, 1993)
Average review score:

This book has been very helpful in an orthopedist office. When you are learning orthopedic terminology and you only use certain terms, when a new term that you are not familiar with comes up, this book is very helpful and cuts down looking into the big medical dictionaries for terms and term spellings.

A must read for EVERY wifeEvery wife and mother should read this book. It will help wifes understand why their husbands react the way they do to certain situations. It will help mothers know how what they are doing today -- good and bad -- will affect their sons in the future. H. Norman Wright is an excellent author and every home should have this book.

Painting Landscapes in Oils
Published in Hardcover by Batsford (January, 1998)
Average review score:

painting landscapes in oilsAs an art teacher, for painting out of doors this book gives a wonderful insight into painting skies, mountains and nature. The simplicity, choice of colours and style is inspirational. Norman Battershill's discriptions of each of the examples are clear and precise like his uncluttered paintings. He has an ability to hone in on focal points and accentuate them by making the colours sing. Hopefully with his book, we will able to capture the beauty of our South African landscapes with as much mood and atmosphere as he has in his book.

Passage to Quivira
Published in Paperback by Forge (November, 1995)
Average review score:

Bob Wiseman - Author of HEALTHY SOUTHWESTERN COOKINGThere's a subtle but fascinating tone to Zollinger's writing.
He has a way of bringing the phenonimal colors of New Mexico
and its people to the minds of the readers. After I read "Passage to Quivira"
I felt like I'd lived in the Ojos Negros Basin and been part of this
beautiful story. I can see why he is one of New Mexico's premier
writers.

PDQ Epidemiology
Published in Paperback by BC Decker (July, 1996)
Average review score:

PDQ Statics: Great overview! If you like to understand where each part of statistics fit in with other parts, start with this book. This is a Macro view of statistical analysis, not a nuts and bolts one. Nevertheless, one needs to understand the major distinctions of the categories and subcategories of statistical analysis, and this book does a wonderful job at it. Recommend it for anyone who cares about the logic of statistics.

Peanut Butter and Jelly for Shabbos
Published in Hardcover by Hachai Pubns (December, 1995)
Average review score:

Mother of five loves this book! What a delightful read! The illustrations are beautiful.
I love the winter scenes! Mother will be home soon with a
new baby sister and the boys are left at home with grandpa.
What little treasures! They try so hard to prepare a proper
Shabbos meal but cannot cook or make the delicacies! They
work together, inspiring me and my own children as they
make a dinner no mother could resist! Oh to see the grandmother
and grandfather eating dinner with the whole family! It is
something you don't see anymore! How wonderful! The entire
story is masterfully written in rhyme and I found it so
enjoyable to read, I think I'll even read it alone! It is rare
when one can find such a book!

don't leave home without reading itThis is a very good book! It explains the development of a person's personality since infancy. The pathologies that could result from a very dysfunctional upbringing is likewise presented in clear and simple terms that makes it easy to understand. I strongly recommend this book, not only for the students of psychiatry but for anyone who wants to understand what makes up his/her personality!

Philosophy of Religion
Published in Paperback by Baker Book House (June, 1988)
Average review score:

Primer on GeislerIt is beyond me why this book is not in print. Does anyone know? I am relatively familiar with most of Geisler's works and this has to be his best. This book is not bed time reading, but it is worth the effort to work through. Geisler will systematically educate you with the major arguments of God's existence, thomistic analogy, religious experience, and the problem of evil.
